Community Connections

Do you know what the nervous system is, or how it works, or what would happen if you didn't have it? Well I can answer those questions and some more for you right here!
But first this is what we did for our community connections. To connect to the community, three members of my group (Allie, Emma and Rebecca) went to Miller Middle School and gave the seventh graders of Mrs. McManus's class a presentation about the Nervous System! It's really important to inform kids on your nervous systems and effects on it, sometimes really helps when other teenagers because there is more of a chance that they will listen than from an adult. Also at this age kids do a lot of careless things and don't think about their future, and they may really damage their nervous system and may really regret it in the future! That's why I feel this presentation is very important.
First we started out by giving them a brief description of out whole nervous system project here, then we started our slide show. We talked about how the nervous system is like the control center of your entire body, how if you did not have nerves and you were to step on a nail, you would not feel it and it could get infected and you could lose your foot. I feel that bringing that up then will help them bring more awareness to their body and how important the nervous system is, and if they are being careless and don't care right now, they will in the future.

 Here is the quiz:
1.            What is the nervous system?
·       It is the control center of your body made up of your brain, spinal cords, and an enormous thread of nerves going through your body.
·       All the veins, arteries, and capillaries going through your body pumping the blood.
·       Just your brain and spine.
·       Just the enormous thread of nerves going through your body.

2.            What are nerves?
·       Shocks going through your body so you can feel, taste, smell, hear, and see.
·       Thin thread of nerve cells called neurons running through your body.
·      Another word for muscles in your body.

3.            How do the nerves work?
·       They take a shock that gets sent through the nerves and ‘spazzes’ your muscles.
·       Heat, cold, touch, sound vibrations or some other message excite a neuron and it generates a tiny electric pulse.

4.            What are the two parts of the nervous system called?
·       Brain and Spinal nervous system.
·       Peripheral and Central nervous system.

5.            What does the ______________________________ nervous system (one of the answers to question #4) do, and what is it made up of?
·       The brain and spinal cord. This sends the messages from the brain to the rest of the body.
·       12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. Gets information from the body and sends out instructions.
The kids really enjoyed this project and participated very well.

On the very far right there is Rebecca.
And on the very far left the last two girls (left to right) are Allie and Emma.
