Research

Drugs are a part of our society. They’ve been here as long as we have, and we will never be able to be rid of them. We need to find ways to deal with drug abuse, especially in teens. An anonymous survey was conducted in October of 2010. The objective was to see the knowledge known about the effects of various drugs on the nervous system and how much they themselves had tried and experienced. Many drugs impact the way our nervous system functions.  It is important for people to realize the harms these substances have on their body.  The question asked in this research was, "Are teens aware of the impacts drugs can have on their nervous system?".  If 50% or more of the participants answers more than half of the questions incorrectly in regards to the impacts of drugs on their nervous system, then society can be considered unaware of these effects.

It was decided to do a two-part survey. The first part consisted of asking some slightly personal questions. The questions asked them to mark if they had ever tried a drug, and if they did, describe their experience. The second half of the survey was asking the participants how much they knew about the long term effects of drugs and alcohol on your body. Each anwser had three effects of each drug, mixed with other similar sounding symptoms to see how much they knew. Constant Contact was used to create and deliver the survey. The effects came from numerous Internet sites, and 90 people participated.

The information found was very repetitive information, so the survey does not focus on the nervous system as wanted. The conclusions concurred with the hypothesis. The conductor of the survey was curious as to whether the information would fit the results of this survey, It’s comforting to know that we seem to be getting the message through to our youth that the effects will harm you. This is an issue they will have to constantly make important descions all of their lives, and will effect everyone's lives in some way.

These graphs show the percentage about the participants expirence with mind-altering drugs.
